Inspired by (S)Pores

Inspired by (S)Pores is a project  that investigates the essential role that fungi play in our ecosystem. Fungi are fascinating – they connect the underground world to the visible animal and plant life through their mycelial network that constitutes the vegetative underground part of fungi. Apart from having a great capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, mycelium is integral to the decomposition of organic matter and is being developed to decompose plastics, clean oil spills, and create eco burial suits. Additionally, it is now used in biomaterial manufacturing such as textiles, mycelium leather, and packaging and building materials.

Inspired by S(P)ores comprises multi-media elements ranging from interactive sculptures made with electronics and bio-materials (specifically mycelium) combined with non-biodegradable materials such as single-use plastics and cans, to drawings, paintings and computer-generated interactive video. The choice of materials is to juxtapose the organic bio-material, making the invisible world visible, and the man-made materials that are unnatural in our environment. The intention of the work is to share my enthusiasm for fungi, to highlight its essentialness to our ecosystem and to allude to our need to become much better cohabitants of the planet.

Assimilation: interactive video that transforms an image of a person to a mycelial network.
